You are more than your physical body

For as long as I can remember, a huge part of my identity had been tied to the physical appearance of my body.

Of all the photos I shared in 2020, this one got the most attention.

Not because of the accomplishment I wrote about (passing the NASM CPT exam) but because of my appearance, specifically my abs.

Don’t get me wrong, I knew this photo would get the attention it did, and maybe that’s why I posted it, but now I see how skewed my mindset was.

Over the years I have identified as:

  • anorexic

  • skinny (recovered but still thin)

  • fragile

  • flexible

  • tiny but strong

  • fit

To name a few.

I was assigned these labels by the world around me, and clung to them because they gave me sense of security and control. These labels, even though they weren’t always healthy, gave me an identity to live up to when I struggled to understand myself and my purpose.

I struggled to find a balance between health and happiness, and used my body and rigid routine as a way to control my feelings, justifying it because I worked in the wellness and fitness industry and had to “look the part”.

Spoiler alert: that didn’t work.

Fitness was no longer for enjoyment and health – it was mandatory.

Since the beginning of 2021 I have taken time to truly evaluate what health looks and feels like for ME. I have worked on tending to the parts of my life (and health) that have been neglected and have been more diligent about finding balance between rest and “the hustle”.

I’ve slowed down.
I’ve practiced self care.
I’ve explored hobbies outside of the gym I forgot I loved.
I’ve learned to listen to and respect my body rather than force it to look a certain way.

And it feels amazing ❤️

You are more than your physical body.

You are more than your disciplined routine.

You are more than the labels you have been identifying with.

You deserve balance and freedom to be whoever you want to be beyond your appearance.

Tell me, what does balance mean to you?

Struggling with body/self confidence?

These are two (of many) topics I work through with my clients!
