FUEL YOUR GOALS: Goal Setting 101

Ok, is it embarrassing to admit that GOAL SETTING is one of my all time favorite topics to talk and write about?! (don’t answer that).

Before we begin, I want to encourage you to grab your journal and a pen, get comfortable and get ready, because I am going to give you a crash course on not only identifying exactly WHAT your biggest goals are in life, but HOW to create a plan to achieve them, get you motivated to take action and get the results you want! If you want to follow along with my FUEL Goal Setting Guide, you can download below!

First, lets get clear on what a GOAL actually is.

A goal is defined as the object of a person's ambition or effort; an aim or desired result.” SO basically, a goal is something that a person really wants in their life.

We all have goals. Personally, professionally, physically, spiritually, etc.

As humans, its natural to want to progress forward in life.

I mean, what fun would it be to go through life day by day doing the exact same thing all of the time… never growing, learning or exploring our true potential.

We want to be better, healthier, happier, but it is up to us to define not only what that looks and feels like, but how we are going to get there… which is where GOAL SETTING comes into play.

I like to think of Goal Setting as “putting a smart, realistic, repeatable action plan in place to achieve a desired result (your goals) within a specific time frame.”

  1. You must be willing to leave your comfort zone. You’ve been used to your current lifestyle for quite some time now, so don’t expect this process to be a walk in the park! Let go of where you are and start being drawn towards your goal, no matter how uncomfortable it might be at times!

  2. Your actions create your reality. Meaning positive actions repeated over time become habits. Negative actions repeated over time become habits. Just something to be aware of 😉

  3. Setbacks and pivots in your plan are inevitable, and believe it or not, they can be a good thing! Be willing to see them as learning experiences and chances to evaluate your action plan and commitments.

  4. This is probably the most important point….be patient with yourself, stay focused, and be CONFIDENT. No matter where this process takes you, know that you are working on becoming the best version of yourself!

Five Steps to Setting and Achieving Your Goals:

Step 1: Write It Out

Physically. In your journal, write out a detailed list of all of the goals that you would like to accomplish for yourself relating to your main vision. Think of this as a mental brain dump! BE SUPER SPECIFIC.

When thinking about your goals and what you want to achieve in life, you have to be EXTREMELY specific and clear.

The more detailed you are, the easier it will be to see what you need to do to start working towards it! Make a list of your goals now.

Step 2: Look at your list and pick ONE goal to focus on!

That doesn’t mean ignore your other goals altogether, but if you’re going to get focused and do this work let’s focus on your TOP goal!

Next, think about a realistic time frame you hope to have this accomplished by. If you were to commit to yourself, how long do you think it will take you to healthily achieve your goal?

Set a date or time frame for when you hope to have it accomplished by, but remember to stay flexible.

Step 3: Break It Down

Once you have your goal in mind, think about what is required to get there. Break your goal down into small, realistic, actionable steps that get you started in the right direction.

What are some small actions that you can take every day that are productive in getting you from where you are now to where you want to be? Who do you need support from? What habits or behaviors do you need to let go of? What habits or behaviors do you need to pick up?

Step 4: Bring everything together and make an action plan!

Now that you have your potential action steps in mind, make a list of the ones that will work for you and begin to think about where you can schedule them into your day.

A good idea is to start with just one of your action steps at a time. This prevents you from trying to take on too much at one time and getting overwhelmed. Once you have truly incorporated your first action step into your day, add another, then another, until these steps become a part of your routine.

It’s important to look at these steps as non-negotiables… like an important meeting (with yourself) that you cannot cancel! Prioritize yourself and your goals!

Step 5: Repeat

Continue to take positive strides in the direction of your goal. Keep an open mind. Stay consistent with your action plan and work at it every day without exceptions.

Stay focused, stay patient and trust the process

So there you have it….. FIVE simple steps to identify, set and GO AFTER your big goals in life. As you work through these goals, remember to trust the process and yourself. Be patient and know that you are capable of achieving anything you set your mind to!
